Show Notes

Chloë Goodchild in conversation with educator, consultant, mentor & equine guide, Oriane Lee Johnston, discussing compassion, nature, horses, tarot, equanimity, practice, and much more.

The VOCE Dialogues offer a simple, accessible in-depth ground for poets, authors, musicians, visual artists, and visionary teachers to share and disseminate their insights about the transformative practice of contemplative, creative and compassionate communication.

Oriane Lee Johnston is based on Cortes Island, in the Salish Sea, on the west coast of Canada. An educator, writer and mentor, her lifework weaves strands of Contemplative Practice, Healing-with-Horses, Wisdom of the Tarot and the Art of Spiritual Guidance, and for the past ten years, exploring the spiritual eco-system of Africa in Zimbabwe.

As program director for sixteen years for Hollyhock, Canada’s Leadership Learning Centre on Cortes Island, Oriane Lee produced Compassion in Action retreats for environmental and social justice activists. Chloe was an integral part of these. She has studied the Tarot and Qabalah for many years and offers consultations for individuals, projects and organizations in the form of Tarot Maps of Guidance.

Oriane Lee’s writing has appeared in the Zambezi Traveler, Canadian Horse Journals, and Harare Magazine, and in several print anthologies on the themes of origins and home. Her stories have been published in online journals including Ecology.com, voicesforbiodiversity.org, Equitrekking.com, vancouverobserver.com, and lifeasahuman.com.  She recently completed a book project, a memoir called The Geography of Belonging: A Love Story in Africa.

Horses have taken Oriane Lee riding in the sacred mountains of Ecuador, swimming in the Indian Ocean, on safari into the Okavango Delta of Botswana and the wilderness of Zimbabwe, and to the legendary wild herds of the Nemiah Valley in B.C.’s Chilcotin Country. And most memorably by donkey cart to meditate in a monastery in the Sagaing Hills of Myanmar. She has co-led equine guided learning programs for Hollyhock Leadership Centre, Royal Roads University, Camosun College, Chiron’s Way, Mary’s Farm & Sanctuary, Spirit Gate Farms, and in Africa.

In 2019 she founded White Horse Sanctuary on the premise that horses are a natural portal to wisdom and healing; helping us fulfill our humanity in a wholesome, congruent and compassionate way.
